El-Gouna is many things. It is a resort on the Red Sea, 20kms north of Hurghada which spreads over an area of 11 million sq. metres and has an 11km beach front.

But there is a difference between it and other tourist destinations. It provides much more than the "three S's" (sun, sand and sea) and good hotel management. It is a place that offers services such as schools, nurseries and a hospital as well as various career opportunities. In short, it is a very active community with all the advantages of a seaside resort.

In El-Gouna you are not confined within the boundaries of a hotel, where all you do is eat in the hotel restaurants, be entertained by whatever is featured that night and shop only in the hotel gift shop.

Here, you can jump on a bus that operates between 9am and 1am, or a shuttle boat that runs from 9am to 4pm and tour around the fourteen hotels of El-Gouna, and do whatever you want to do. And if you want to escape from hotels altogether, you are at liberty to go to the town area where there are shops, restaurants, a supermarket, greengrocer, post office........... in fact all that you would expect to find in any true community.

Built on clusters of islands surrounded by turquoise lagoons, El-Gouna seems to have something for everyone; secluded beaches, desert safaris, the world's best diving spots as well as in-house entertainment and a great night life.

According to El-Gouna's founders, the project began with a romantic vision: friends, boats and a passion for the sea. What started out as a dream evolved into a fully comprehensive resort with luxurious villas, internationally-renowned hotel chains, a wide range of restaurants and a vibrant bustling village.

Eating Out
(
In fact there is little reason to eat in, there are so many places to choose from)
Here are just some we have been to.

Garo's Snack Stop. George, the boss at Garo's is a dead ringer for Ken Stott and claims to have been an Elvis impressionist before he started running the family restaurant!

He will make you very welcome: the food is Lebanese/Armenian and very good ~ the title 'Snack Stop' doesn't do it justice, as they have a full restaurant menu. The mezze is particularly good value.

Downtown, (past Ebaed supermarket): Tel extension 2448

The Oriental Grill is part of the Sharif group of restaurants in El Gouna owned by Omar's son. Marianne (pictured here) is of Russian origin, and will welcome you with open arms. The menus are on blackboards which are brought to your table, and the choice ~ from oven or barbeque grill ~ is excellent.

Particularly good is the seafood, and the bread served straight out of their oven has to be the best in El Gouna

Kafr El Gouna: Tel extension 2261

New for 2007 is the Athena Greek Tavern ~ the only Greek restaurant in El Gouna, where you are welcomed with a free glass of ouzo. The staff speak a variety of languages, and the menu is equally varied.

Try the Greek Banquet ~ but go on a fast for the day before you go!

Downtown: Tel extension 2429

We had to visit The White Elephant Thai Restaurant (click here to see why I love Thailand so much)

The waitress was taken aback by my Thai greeting (just about the limit of my vocabulary) but when we got chatting we discovered she came from the part of Thailand where The Anglo-Thai Foundation operates.

The menu is extensive, really good and, by UK Thai retaurant standards, not at all expensive.

If you have been to El Gouna, and know of a particularly good restaurant, or any other local amenity you would like to recommend, please let us know so that we can tell everybody about it.

Whirling Dervishes

Visit any of the resorts on the Egyptian Red Sea coastline and for sure you'll be invited to an Oriental evening.  As you indulge in fine Egyptian food, sip sweet honeyed tea, or puff a Shisha with the apple smelling smoke curling around you, creating a mystical veil,  you will be transported into the magical world of the orient with your own court of whirling dervishes and belly dancers. The whirling Dervishes trace their origin to the 13th century Ottoman Empire.  They are also known as the Mevlevi Order and are Sufi, a spiritual offshoot of Islam.  Today entertainers, not true Sufi perform most of the shows. Nevertheless, the performances are amazing and the concentration and training required to be able to spin for hours on end is immense.

The dance originates from the Sufi religion.  The word Sufi is translated from the Arabic work Suf meaning wool or others believe from the Greek word 'sophos' meaning wisdom.  There are also two fables on how the dance began.  The first is when Rumi was walking through the goldsmith area of Konya in Turkey.  He heard beautiful music in the craftsmen's hammering and began to turn in harmony.  The second is the story of a tradesman spinning wool from a bale onto a spindle.  In order to prevent the wool from breaking, the spinning movement had to be continuous from the right to the left hand.
